Portugal's former first lady Maria Barroso has died. Lisbon's Red Cross Hospital, said the ex-actress died on Tuesday, 10 days after being admitted following a fall at home and going into a coma.
Maria Barroso met her husband at Lisbon University in the 1940s and together they opposed the dictatorship that governed Portugal. Mario Soares was imprisoned several times and sent into exile with his wife. They were both among the founders, in 1973, of Portugal’s center-left Socialist Party.

Migrant dies in Channel Tunnel after jumping on UK-bound train
A would-be migrant has died in the Channel Tunnel between France and Britain.
The person is thought to have died from their injuries after trying to jump on a shuttle to the UK.
Dislocated by war, political turmoil and poverty, 3,000 migrants are living in makeshift camps in and around the French port of Calais, home to the Eurotunnel terminal, hoping to find a way to the other side.

Nobody knows.”The border is nearby. More than 60,000 people have been caught trying to cross illegally this year. Most of them come from Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq. They want to reach Western Europe, or eastern parts, but people like a Syrian we talked to don’t want to stay in Hungary.

Punti sorvegliati da agenti con i giubbetti antiproiettile, perché il dispositivo di sicurezza è stato elevato in previsione dell’anniversario ma anche per via del recente attentato che ha colpito cittadini britannici in Tunisia. Tra i 52 morti di dieci anni fa c’era Miriam Hyman, rimasta uccisa nell’esplosione di Tavistock Square. La sorella racconta che era entrata in ufficio, le avevano detto che stava succedendo qualcosa, e pensò “se ci sono delle esplosioni in metropolitana e sugli autobus, non si sa dove andremo a finire”. “Ma – aggiunge – non immaginavo che mia sorella fosse proprio su quell’autobus”.
Oltre ai 52 morti, la strage causò più di 700 feriti, quel 7 luglio del 2005. Poco prima delle nove del mattino, tre attentatori suicidi legati ad Al Qaida entrarono in azione in tre diversi settori della metropolitana. Circa un’ora dopo, agì il quarto uomo , su un autobus.

Kenya: attentato di al Shabaab contro villaggio al confine con Somalia
Gli islamisti di al Shabaab hanno ucciso almeno 14 persone, nel villaggio di Mandera, nel nord-est del Kenya, al confine con la Somalia. Hanno agito durante la notte, lanciando esplosivi contro le abitazioni dove riesiedono in gran parte operai impiegati nelle cave della zona. Mandera era già stata colpita lo scorso novembre, quando 36 lavoratori avevano perso la vita. Abbiamo ucciso più di 10 cristiani, ha affermato un portavoce del gruppo terroristico somalo Al Shabaab, che negli ultimi anni ha compiuto diversi attacchi contro il Kenya, perché impegnato nella missione dell’Unione Africana in Somalia.
Ad aprile il gruppo affiliato ad al Qaeda aveva ucciso 148 persone, in gran parte studenti, nell’università di Garissa, sempre vicino alla frontiera.

Victim of London bombings worried that people are forgetting what happened
A minute of silence has been held in memory of the victims of the 2005 London bombings. The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, and the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, have laid floral tributes to mark the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, which killed 56 people. Also gathered were relatives of the victims and survivors.
The commemorations come as Britain still reels from an attack in Tunisia last month, which resulted in Britain’s worst loss of life in a militant assault since the London attacks. “Today the country comes together to remember the victims of one of the deadliest terrorist atrocities in mainland Britain,” Cameron said in a statement. “Ten years on from the 7/7 London attacks, the threat of terrorism continues to be as real as it is deadly. The murder of 30 innocent Britons whilst holidaying in Tunisia is a brutal reminder of that fact. But we will never be cowed by terrorism.”
One of the 2005 victims being remembered is Miriam Hyman. Her sister, Esther, told reporters: “I thought, well, my goodness, if there are explosions on the Underground and then on a bus, who knows where it’s going to end. “But of course I didn’t realize at that time that my sister was actually on that bus.” Esther Hyman says she is worried that people are forgetting what happened.

Pope Francis has met the President of Ecuador on the first leg of what is being dubbed his "homecoming" tour of South America.
This is the first visit by a pope to Ecuador in 30 years and hundreds of thousands have turned out to welcome the pontiff. "I give a blessing to each one of you, for your families, and for this great person, the noble Ecuadorian people," he said. The pope spoke to an open-air mass attended by an estimated 800,000 people.

Italian police are said to have carried out an anti-Islamist sweep in the central city of Pisa following the arrest of a Moroccan suspect. Jalal El Hanoui, was detained in a dawn raid after allegedly promoting Islamic militancy . Italy has recently stepped up surveillance individuals suspected of supporting militants in Syria and Iraq after some of its citizens are thought to have travelled to the region to fight.
